:
Predator insects are ones that attack pest insects in one of two ways:
- They tear pest insects apart and eat their parts, or.
- They insert a probe into the pest insect and suck out their juices.
They also do not eat plants but may eat nectar or pollen as an interim or supplemental
diet. They may be predators in either or both the adult or larvae stage of their
development. They also have various eating preferences which may be broad or narrow.
Common predators are lady bugs (beetles) adults and larvae, rove beetle adults, lace wing
larvae, syrphid fly larvae, etc. I will include spiders and mites even though they are not
in the insect class; they are classified as arachnids.
Go to predator index for further information on specific
insect predators.
